Since 1982
Ben, Tina, and Frieda Koper
Anchorage, Alaska

Ben Koper was classically trained in Holland in the fine art of pastry making. He studied under the masters in the large hotels of Europe. Though a Dutchman by birth, his heart and mind always dreamt of far away places and adventures.

After marrying Sientje (Tina) Moerman in 1952 they began their adventure that would lead them to Anchorage Alaska just weeks before the Great Earthquake of 1964 struck. Not quite sure this was the adventure they where ready for, remaining in Alaska was an uncertainty. That was until a gentleman by the name of Wally Hickel announced he would be building a new hotel in downtown Anchorage. Ben figured if Wally was staying he would stay as well. Wally later went on to become the governor of Alaska.

For the next almost 20 years Ben would work at the local hotels and grocery store chains always dreaming of beginning his own pastry shop where he could use real butter, real chocolate and real whipped creams. These were items others told him American's would not pay a little extra for. He never believed them.

After several years of working on the North Slope his dream could become a reality. In 1982 at an age when most are considering retirement Ben and Tina began their pastry shop, the same year Ben achieved his goal of attaining his private pilot's license. The Flying Dutchman Pastry Shop was born.

Anchorage Alaska had its first European Pastry Shop. For the past 23 years The Flying Dutchman has set the standard of excellence that all other local bakeries have tried to follow.

After attempting college for a year their daughter Frieda joined them at the store. As the years progressed Frieda began to follow in the footsteps of her father. Slowly Frieda took over more responsibilities.
Sadly in January of 2003 Ben Koper passed away.
Tina and Frieda have vowed to continue the honor and tradition of fine quality pastries and chocolates.

Ben's slogan :
The Flying Dutchman Pastry Shop
"A Tradition of Excellence"
Has and Will Continue for Years to Come.
