Ben,Tina and Frieda
Koper
Anchorage, Alaska

Ben Koper was classically trained in the Netherlands in the fine art of pastry making. He studied under the masters in the large hotels of Europe. Though a Dutchman by birth, his heart and mind always dreamt of far away places and adventures.
After marrying Sientje (Tina) Moerman in 1952 they began their adventure that would lead them to Anchorage Alaska just weeks before the Great Earthquake of 1964 would strike on Good Friday. Not quite sure this was the adventure they where ready for remaining in Anchorage was an uncertainty. That was until a gentleman by the name of Wally Hickel announced he would be building a new hotel in downtown Anchorage. Ben figured if Wally was staying he would stay as well. Mr. Hickel later went on to become governor of Alaska. Ben would years later become friends with Wally's son Joey.

the rock behind all the Koper dreams

For the next 20 years Ben would work at the local hotels and grocery store chain bakeries, always dreaming of beginning his own pastry shop were he could use real butter, real chocolate and real whipped cream. These where the items others told him Americans would never pay extra for. Ben never believed them. He knew good taste was a world wide desire.
After several years of working on the North Slope his dream could become a reality. In 1982 at an age when most humans are considering retirement Ben and Tina began their pastry shop. That same year Ben achieved his life long goal of attaining his private pilot's license. And so
The Flying Dutchman Pastry Shop
was born.
Anchorage Alaska had its first European Pasty Shop. For the past 27 years The Flying Dutchman has set the standard of excellence that Ben learned long ago from the old masters.
After attempting college for a year their daughter Frieda joined her parents in the bakery. As the years passed Frieda took over more responsibillities of the baking. Sadly in January of 2003 Ben Koper passed away.
Tina and Frieda have vowed to continue the honor and tradition of fine pastries and chocolates that Ben worked so hard to begin in his own pastry shop.
